There is no single universally agreed-upon IQ threshold for genius. Different frameworks propose different cutoffs:

Genius IQ vs. Exceptional Achievement
Research has repeatedly shown that extremely high IQ is necessary but not sufficient for genius-level achievement. The individuals who leave the most enduring marks on history — in science, art, music, literature, and leadership — tend to combine high cognitive ability with:
- Exceptional intrinsic motivation and obsessive focus
- Willingness to tolerate failure and ambiguity
- Creative and divergent thinking
- Domain-specific expertise accumulated over thousands of hours
- Productive periods of sustained deep work
As psychologist Dean Keith Simonton has argued, genius is better understood as a combination of intelligence, creativity, and productivity — not a fixed cognitive trait.
Famous Estimated Genius IQs
Many famous genius IQ estimates circulate online. Most are retrospective assessments with limited reliability. Some commonly cited figures:
- Leonardo da Vinci — estimated 180–200 (posthumous, highly speculative)
- Isaac Newton — estimated 190 (retrospective estimate)
- Albert Einstein — never tested; estimates range from 160–180
- Stephen Hawking — estimated around 160
- Marilyn vos Savant — 228 (Guinness World Records, 1986; methodology disputed)
- Terence Tao — estimated 220–230 (contemporary mathematician)
Child Prodigies and IQ
Child prodigies — children who demonstrate extraordinary ability in a specific domain (chess, music, mathematics) — do not always have uniformly high IQ scores across all domains. Many prodigies show extraordinary performance in one area while remaining unremarkable in others. This suggests that domain-specific giftedness involves specialised neural organization, not simply high general intelligence.
The Two-Sigma Problem
Educational researcher Benjamin Bloom identified what he called the "two-sigma problem" — the finding that students who receive one-on-one tutoring perform, on average, two standard deviations (30 IQ points equivalent in terms of effect size) better than students in conventional classroom settings. This suggests that environment and instruction quality can produce genius-level performance in students of average intelligence — further complicating the relationship between IQ and exceptional achievement.
